It is autoimmune hypercoagulable state evoking blood clots in any organ of the body with or without associated pregnancy complications. This disease have tendency to attack all organs. It seldom presents as catastrophic form wherein rapid organ failure occurs due to generalized thrombosis. It can be seen as primary APS when not associated with any other rheumatologic conditions or as secondary APS when there is an associated autoimmune disease.

It is one of the most common cause of recurrent pregnancy losses, stroke in young, recurrent DVT, sudden loss of vision. These patients have circulating antibodies called as anti phospholipid antibodies. It demands treatment with anticoagulant medication like heparin, warfarin, and acitrom with careful supervision of INR within the therapeutic range. Many newer anitcoagulants are available in market which doesnot warrant stringent INR tracking.
